Derek studied photography at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario before setting off for two years in Asia where he taught English and began his career as a freelance photographer. His experience shooting and traveling abroad solidified a passion for documentary work that he pursues as a freelance news photographer and through personal projects. His motivation as a photographer is to share in the experiences of others and tell their stories. He approaches ideas and emotions through photography and draws from its' power as a narrative form. Technically and stylistically he prefers to work in terms of photo essays and series, visualizing one photograph as it relates to another. Derek currently lives and works out of Oakville.
